"Grille from the Cathedral of Chartres, France, 13th century. Smiths, when ornamenting their gates and grilles, copied the inventiveness of the Cathedral stone masons. The motifs are often as delicate as lace. In this design the grille has narrow apertures and ends in square rods with charming fleur de lis rosettes.
One of the greatest Gothic cathedrals, Chartres was built during the 12th and 13th centuries. With its exceptional decoration, its nine gates and over 100 examples of stained glass, it is internationally acknowledged as a masterpiece. Numerous writers have celebrated its glory, the most notable of whom is the French poet, Charles Peguy."
