Located in the Vosges region of France, Clairefontaine was established on the site of a 16th century paper mill. The Clairefontaine mill has been making paper since 1858 and stationery products since 1890. The River Meurthe supplies the water for Clairefontaine's Vosges mill. The water is so clean when it leaves their high performance biological treatment station that local people can fish, swim and boat downstream within sight of the manufacturing facility. The company is best known for being the first school stationery manufacturer in France.

The fine quality of Clairefontaine notebooks has been appreciated by generations of French students. Clairefontaine notebooks contain the finest paper bound for everyday use. They are sewn with linen thread and feature cloth spines. People love them for the quality
of the paper, and the enjoyment of writing they experience when they use them. Clairefontaine stamps all of its products with its "water pourer" triangle logo.

Made only with pulp from sustainable forests, Clairefontaine paper has been certified according to recognized international standards and independent third parties such as PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification), FSC (Forest Stewardship Council), and others. These certifications also ensure the protection of endangered wildlife habitat.
Award-winning: Our respect for natural resources began long before legally mandated. Clairefontaine was one of the first French companies to be awarded the "Water Trophy" for its facilities in 1988.
Innovative: We continue to perfect our machinery to have received several environmental awards for our inventive "clean" papermaking technology.
Socially responsible: Worker health and safety laws are observed, and the rights of indigenous communities are respected.
Recyclable: Clairefontaine paper is 100% recyclable, producing fibers of excellent quality. All the paper made in our mill is systematically recycled throughout all states of production.
Energy Efficient: We now supply 80% of our own electricity.
